What is the National Innovation Visa (NIV)

  • The NIV is a permanent visa intended for exceptionally talented individuals worldwide, who can contribute to Australia’s innovation, research, economy, and global reputation.
  • It replaced (or merges features of) the former Global Talent Visa and some aspects of the Business Innovation & Investment programs. You cannot directly apply—candidates must be invited after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI).

Key Eligibility Criteria / Requirements

To qualify, applicants must satisfy a number of criteria. Below is a breakdown of the major requirements and features:

1. Internationally recognised, exceptional, outstanding achievement

  • You need a track record of exceptional and outstanding achievements in your field (research, academia, arts, sport, entrepreneurship, innovation, etc.
  • Your achievements should be internationally significant (not just local).
  • You should still be prominent in your field, meaning you continue to contribute, be visible, and maintain professional standing.

2. Nominator / Endorsement

  • You must be nominated by an Australian individual or organisation with national reputation in your field, via Form 1000 – Nomination for National Innovation Visa.
  • The nominator can be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen, or an organisation.

3. Invitation via EOI

  • You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) outlining your achievements, how you qualify, and your intended contribution to Australia.
  • EOIs remain valid for two years.
  • If your EOI is selected (based on priority sectors and strength of application), you will receive an invitation to apply.
  • Once invited, you must lodge your visa application within 60 days.

4. Other Standard Visa Requirements

  • Health & character checks are mandatory (as with most Australian visas).
  • English language requirement: You must demonstrate functional English. If you cannot, you may need to pay an additional visa charge (a “secondary Visa Application Charge”) to waive it.
  • Age considerations: There is no strict age limit, but applicants under 18 or over 55 must show they will bring exceptional benefit to Australia (i.e. their contributions must be clearly of high value).
  • Residency status: You can apply from outside Australia, or if you are already in Australia on a substantive visa.

5. Priority Sectors & Processing Tiers

Australia gives priority to certain sectors and for some candidates, higher priority processing. Some of these include:

  • Priority 1 (highest): Global experts who hold internationally prestigious awards (e.g. Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Olympic Gold).
  • Priority 2: Candidates who are nominated by Commonwealth, State, or Territory government agencies.
  • Priority 3: Exceptional achievement in Tier 1 sectors such as critical technologies, health industries, renewables & low-emission technology.
  • Priority 4: Outstanding achievement in Tier 2 sectors — e.g. agri-food/agtech, defence, space, education, financial services/fintech, infrastructure & transport, resources.
  • The priority assigned influences how quickly your EOI might lead to an invitation.

State / Territory Nomination (Optional Advantage)

  • Many states/territories provide nomination pathways for NIV, which can give you priority status when Home Affairs considers EOIs.
  • For example, New South Wales has a Registration of Interest (ROI) process for NIV nominations, with several tailored pathways (researchers, entrepreneurs, creatives, sports, investors).
  • South Australia also offers state nomination via categories such as entrepreneurial activities, IP / patents, academic credentials, etc.
  • Being nominated by a state can improve the chance of reaching Priority 2 in processing.

Benefits & Features of NIV

  • Once granted, the visa is permanent, so you can live, work, and study in Australia indefinitely.
  • You (and your eligible family members) may access Medicare and other rights available to permanent residents.
  • It is a direct PR pathway (unlike many skilled visas that start with temporary stages).
  • The visa gives you flexibility: you are not tied to a particular employer, and may work independently or in your own ventures.
  • Potential to later apply for Australian citizenship, if you meet other criteria (residency, character, etc.).
